🥈 @willrs12 finishes runner up in @totalenergies_maratonmurcia 🥈
On the 2nd February, Will Strangeway took to the streets of Murcia, Spain, for the TotalEnergies Maratón Murcia Costa Cálida to “enjoy” this race.
Will said, “I wasn’t really expecting to run that quick in Murcia without the proper marathon build up block. I knew I was in decent shape with the Valencia 10k time and I just wanted to enjoy this marathon”.
What happened next may evoke many different emotions. Feeling strong from recent races, Will looked in good shape for a strong result, explaining, “During the race, I had a feeling I’d be close to my personal best, with my splits hovering around my current 2:18 time. I was feeling strong, aside from the blisters on both feet!”
Yet 2.7 miles from the finish line, something happened…
“That was until I was sent the wrong way at around 23.5 miles. I think it knocked me a bit mentally, knowing it cost me time”. Will was in 2nd place, around a minute and a half off the leader, and clear of third place, when the lead bikes, marshals and stewards led him onto the incorrect route along the course.
Confusion struck and Will carried on for a short period before being gesticulated to turn back and head in another direction. Restarting his rhythm and on already tired legs, he headed back.
This, I’m sure would take some stuffing out of many of us, but not Will, who carried on the secure a comfortable runner-up position in a staggering 2:18:33, only seconds away from his PB, which is also a club record.
“In the end, I was more than happy with my final result. With it being a solo run and just 32 seconds away from my best time”.
Well done, Will! Some effort 💥👏❤️
