The very best of British Athletics returned to Birmingham for the UK Athletics Indoor Championships.
With prestigious National titles on the line, the Championships also served as the official trial event for the World Athletics Indoor Championships. It lived up to its promise of being a highly entertaining two days of action, with a sell out crowd to start off the Olympic and Paralympic year.
Mabel Akande who was at the very same meeting last year as a kit carrier, started proceedings qualifying in her heat through to the semis in an easy 7.45 seconds. Callum Winchester-Wright was next drawing a tough heat with one of the favourites to win Andy Robertson and the legendary Dwain Chambers. Callum narrowly missed out on a place to the semis to Dwain Chambers by the smallest of margins, both given the same time with Callum equalling his pb of 6.89 seconds from a few weeks previous. Bringing his indoor campaign to an end and moving on to a very exciting outdoor season.
Mabel moved smoothly through to the semis by gaining automatic qualification to the final with 7.30 seconds. At the end of a very long day the Women’s 60m final was much anticipated and it didn’t fail to impress. At the age of 17 years Mabel ran the race of her young career and still only in her first year as an Under 20 to take the Bronze medal in a time of 7.32 seconds moving her to 4th in the Senior UK rankings with the likes of Daryll Neita, Imani Lansiquot and Amy Hunt ahead of her.
