Superb running at the British Masters Road Running Champs at Mallory Park gave the LWAC quartet well deserved silver medals.
After 4 legs of 3 miles a strong Aldershot team were just 44 seconds ahead of the Wellington squad at the finish line with powerhouse clubs Sale Harriers and Birchfield well in arrears.
Claire Cooney made a solid start with 18.54 and 3rd place at the end of leg 1 before Jude Broadbent ran the fastest lap on leg 2 in 19.03 to move the club to 2nd spot. Sylvia Parkinson was a late inclusion in the team after deciding she had recovered sufficiently from an excellent London Marathon run the week before. An outstanding effort on leg 3 saw her drop just one place with a highly creditable time of 19.56. The final leg saw a blitzing effort from Nat Burns to secure the silver medals and in the process produce comfortably the fastest leg of the entire race with 17.39 – no one else was inside 18.00 minutes.
Hopefully this result will provide a stepping stone to further club involvement in relays – the firepower is there, particularly in the women’s squad, to make a huge impact at National level.
