Thursday 3rd November 2016: National Cross Country Relays – 5th November 2016 – Berry Hill Park Mansfield:

Chilly but bright weather graced the Saucony English National Cross Country Relays at Berry Hill Park Mansfield. The stunning autumn colours in the park woods, contrasting with the club colours and flags of the more than 1100 teams who contested the 10 category championships.

From Lincoln Wellington, 46 athletes, making up 16 teams, stood up to be counted alongside some full international runners from across England. Admirably, many of our athletes turned out and ran, despite not having a complete team. Some athletes returned from University for the day to represent the club. Alongside them, coaches and team managers braved the cold and wind, giving up valuable personal time to support their runners and teams. Parents, partners and siblings made up the entourage. Well done and thank you everyone!
The course, comprising 2km, 2.5km and 3km laps includes open parkland, lakeland and mature oak woodland, taking the athletes on a twisty, winding and hilly terrain. Spectators have fantastic views of the races being able to move between the numerous vantage points, watching as the runners vie for overall supremacy or at least bragging rights in the car on the way home!

The day started well with the Junior Ladies championship in which we had 2 full teams. Over a number of years now we have benefited from amazing strength in depth among this group of young ladies, meaning that we enter many competitions with high aspirations. With the ‘A’ team (Catrina Thomas, Bella Williams and Abbie Donnelly) finishing, agonisingly, 15 seconds or so outside the medals in 4th place and the ‘B’ team (Rebekah Ward, Laura Wilkinson and Libby Ball) placed 19th, despite an error by race officials causing a big delay to the start for our second stage runner, Laura.
Senior ladies (Rochelle Harrison, Ellie Thorpe and Sophie Darling) followed the Juniors, taking 29th position out of 123 complete teams, and this despite missing other key athletes on the day.
To bookend a good day for the club, the senior men were out in force, fielding 12 athletes and hence 3 full teams. (Add to that at least one reserve, in full club kit, waiting in the wings.

Waiting with a degree of relief as it happens, having observed the pace with which the guys tackled the course!).This is testimony to the ever growing strength in depth in men’s running in the club. At the end of 4 legs of a challenging 5 km course, we were able to boast 11th place for the ‘A’ team (Matt Bowser, Tom Straw, Shane Robinson and Joe Wilkinson), 27th place for the ‘B’ team (Ronny Wilson, James Straw, Adam Scott and Ryan Page) and 59th place for the ‘C’ team (Adam Baker, Marc Thorpe, Sam Shuttleworth and Harry Baxter). These placings stand out when put in context of a total of 166 competing teams. In between these were wonderful performances from our other teams:

  • Under 17 men (Archie Richardson, Robert Evans, Jack Rushby and Kieran Gillespie) placed 66th
  • Under 15 girls, (Madelaine Wood, Ellanor Brown, Hazel Williams, Evie Thompson-Moulding, Hannah Brown and Ella Bennet), taking 38th and 83rd places respectively
  • Under 15 boys, (Joseph Green, Jack Stocks, F Molinario, B Taylor, Nathan Allum), taking 34th place
  • Under 13 girls (I Vinter, L Davies, H Davis, S Knapp, S Rosling-Cook) finishing in 82 place
  • Under 13 boys (Ross Butcher, Shane Lee, A Kumar, R Smith, J Davies) finishing in 74th place

Monday 31st October 2016: Lincoln Wellington Athletics Report – North of England XC Relays Sheffield:

Gold medal winning performances from both senior teams at the North of England Cross Country Relays at Sheffield’s Graves Park gave the Lincoln Wellington endurance squad a fantastic start to the winter season.

Rochelle Harrison led off for the women’s team and a very good run among a classy leading group saw her back in a close 5th place with a time of 11 minutes 55 seconds for the two mile circuit. A storming 2nd leg from  Bella Williams with 11.59 took the lead group apart  and she handed Abbie Donnelly a lead of around 100 metres. The result was never really in doubt on the final lap with Donnelly’s time of 11.44 (4th fastest of the whole race) bringing her home a long way clear of 2nd placed Rotherham Harriers. A solid effort from the Wellington B team of Ellie Thorpe, Laura Wilkinson and Gemma Selwood gave them a very respectable 14th place overall.

The Wellington men’s squad immediately rose to the challenge of matching their female counterparts and a strong opening leg from Joe Wilkinson brought him back in the thick of the action in 3rd position with   9.59. Tom Straw attacked hard on leg 2 and a big effort saw him hand over a useful lead to Ronnie Wilson in 10.20. The latter was a late promotion into the A team but performed his supersub role with distinction  – a time of  10.25  giving anchor leg runner Matt Bowser plenty of breathing space. With Bowser flying round in solitary state the lead was never challenged and a time of 10.09 completed the Wellington twin gold haul. The men’s team also fielded a B team and James Straw (10.44), Ryan Page (10.48), Marc Thorp (11.36) and Simon Machin (14.03) were in 28th spot at the finish.

Quite a few of the younger Wellington athletes had their first taste of competition at area level in this event and all acquitted themselves well. The best results came from the U15 teams with the boys A team taking 15th place and the girls finishing 18th

An excellent team effort on their home track gave the Lincoln Wellington squad a clear cut victory in their final Northern League match of the season. This result gave the club 2nd spot in the league overall and ensured the team’s place in division 2 next season.

Young sprinter Georgina Adam continued her remarkable season by winning the 100m in a personal best 12.0 and also the 200m in 24.7. Another good effort came from Rochelle Harrison with 9.57.3 for 2nd place in the 3000m and in the B 3000m there was a personal best 10.53.0 for Sophie Darling in 3rd position. There was a good start to the track program with Summer Benson picking up 3rd place in the 400m hurdles and Laura Wilkinson collecting more points with a win in the B race. Ellie Thorpe was also in the points with 3rd place in the 800m and 4th spot in the 400m. Gemma Selwood was delighted with a big personal best 4.56.0 for 5th place in the 1500m. In the field events the hammer provided the easily best result for the women’s squad with Alice Barnsdale’s 49.87m easily taking the A contest and Lindsay Campbell following up in the B event with 31.14m. The promising Abi Small cleared a very useful 2.70m for 2nd spot in the pole vault with the B contest going to Hayley Fox with 2.10m.

For the men’s team there was maximum points in the 400m from Kobe Tong (53.0) and Dave Allworthy (55.7). And Adam Baker and Marc Thorpe also produced a pair of successes in the 3000m steeplechase. Lewis Jagger ran very well for 2nd in the 5000m in a personal best 15.15.5 and Josh Stone took the B contest in 16.16.5. Joe Wilkinson and Harry Baxter filled the runners up spots in the 800m contests  and Dan Hill took the same position in both the 100m and 200m. A personal best 4.09.6 gave Thomas Trimble 3rd place in the 1500m. The men’s team repeated the women’s maximum points haul in the hammer with Wayne Roddis-Clarke (48.92) and Adie White (25.96) scoring in the two events. Sunday 15th May 2016: Lincoln Wellington Athletics Report – Northern League Match 1 Doncaster

The newly promoted Lincoln Wellington squad made a bright start to their Northern League Division 2 campaign with an impressive 2nd place in the opening match of the season at Doncaster. It was most encouraging to see so many of the club’s younger athletes competing and two of those produced the best of the men’s track results with Archie Richardson taking the 400m A race in good style with 52.3 and Kobe Tong doing likewise with 53.0 in the B race. And there were more useful performances from the youngsters with Dan Skinner in 4th place in the A 800m and B 1500m, Dan Crow scoring in the B 800m and Tom Trimble running well for 4th spot in the A 1500m. Veteran Dan Hill was back in a Wellington vest and picked up good points with 3rd places in the 100m (11.6) and 200m (23.4). Richard Brown ran a nicely paced 5000m to score in a very useful time of 15.23.5. Mark Afford contested a massive seven events throughout the afternoon including 2nd place in the 400m hurdles and a win in the B 3000m steeplechase. New member Ashley Steventon is going to be a big asset to the club in the field and his five events included good wins in the triple jump(12.15m) and high jump (1.90m). The ever reliable Wayne Clarke took the hammer with 46.03m.

The younger athletes were also to the fore in the women’s events with top sprinter Georgina Adam scoring in the 100m in 12.5 and the 200m in 25.5. There was a great result in the 3000m with Bella Williams (9.58) just outpacing Nat Burns (10.02) over the final lap for an impressive Wellington 1-2. The latter was also 2nd in the 1500m in 4.46.9 with Laura Wilkinson 5th in the B race. Ellie Clarke and Gemma Selwood both doubled up in the 400m and 800m to pick up useful points and further good points went to Lucy Thornton and Summer Benson (making her senior debut) in the 400m hurdles. Lydia Chamberlin was the sole field event winner for the women with 5.51m in the long jump and followed with 1.55m for 3rd in the high jump. Denise Timmis picked up 5th spot in the B long jump with 4.06m and most of the remaining field burden was carried by Alice Barnsdale and Lindsay Campbell with the best results from that pair coming in the hammer with 49.24m and 34.26m respectively.

Sunday 15th May 2016: Another fantastic performance from Sam Atkin who won the senior men’s 3000m at the Oregon Twilight meeting in the USA in a new club record time of 7.56.7. This places Sam 6th in the National 3000m rankings at the current time.

In view of the likely large number of eligible athletes for the above events in the Autumn the Club Committee has agreed the following selection process for the A teams in each event. Northern Road Relays – as the legs for this are around 5k the A team will be selected from the best 5000m track, 5k road or 5k Park run times achieved between 1st April and 30th August. The team will be selected subject to availability and fitness immediately after 30th August. It is highly likely a B team will also be selected for this event.

National Road Relays – The A team will be the best 4 times from the Northern Road Relays regardless of A or B team times in that event. If an athlete with an A team qualifying time for the Northern Relays was not available for that event they will be considered for A team selection for the National relays National XC Relays – As the legs for this are 2.5k for U20 and 3k for seniors the A team will be selected from the best 3000m times recorded between 1st April and 30th August in U20 and Senior age groups

Norman Clarke – Sadly passed away 25th January 2016

“Athletics was a huge part of Dad’s life, they were laughing in the hospital because his magazine of choice was still Athletics Weekly, so it is only fitting that one of the two photos going into the Order of Service for his funeral are of him running. My understanding is that he still holds the 10 mile record for Lincolnshire, something for which we, and he, were very proud.”

Norman’s Funeral will be held on the 11th February, 1:30pm at St Mary’s Church Welton. If anyone would like to attend they would be very welcome.
